The short version. SoundQuest keeps everything on the device it runs on. Voice recordings, camera images and students' records are never sent to us or anyone else. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Each student's records are encrypted separately, and the speech-language pathologist (SLP) can export or delete them at any time.
This policy covers the SoundQuest app for iPhone, iPad and Android ("SoundQuest", "the app"). SoundQuest is a working name and the app is in development. This policy describes the app as it will ship, and we will update it before release.
| Data | Collected by us? | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Student profile (name or code, birth year and month, dialect, practice targets) | No | On the device, encrypted |
| Practice results and progress reports | No | On the device, encrypted |
| Voice recordings | No | On the device, encrypted, only if the SLP turns recording on |
| Camera images | No | Never stored. Processed live, then discarded |
| Advertising IDs, analytics, crash reports, location, contacts | No | Not collected at all |
Who we are
SoundQuest is made by JC Goodworks, a sole proprietorship based in the United States ("we", "us"). You can reach us at support@jcgoodworks.com.
SoundQuest is used by SLPs, schools and clinics (together, "the SLP") to give children speech sound practice. The SLP decides which students use the app and what is recorded. For student records under FERPA, and for a school's or clinic's other legal duties, the SLP's school or clinic controls the data. We never receive it.
Everything stays on the device
SoundQuest version 1 has no cloud service, no sign-in and no server that holds student data. The app works with no internet connection. Speech scoring and face tracking run entirely on the device.
The app keeps its records in an encrypted database. Each student's records, including any recordings, are encrypted with that student's own key, and that key is protected by a key held in the device's secure storage. One student's records are never shown in another student's session.
If we later offer optional sync or backup, it will be off until a school or clinic turns it on, it will carry only derived results (never raw recordings), and we will update this policy and say so in the app before it launches.
Student information
The SLP enters each student in clinician mode, which is locked with a passcode or Face ID. A student profile holds:
- a name, initials or a code, as the SLP chooses. We recommend codes or initials.
- birth year and month (never the full date), used to apply age norms for speech sounds
- dialect, so that dialect-consistent speech is not marked as an error
- practice targets, the plan, session results and notes the SLP writes
While a child is practising, the app shows only that child's practice, and an adult must unlock clinician mode to leave it.
Microphone and voice recordings
SoundQuest uses the microphone so a child can practise speaking. The app analyses the sound on the device to give feedback on each try. By default, audio is analysed and then discarded.
If the SLP turns on recording for a student, short recordings of that student's tries are kept in the encrypted store on the device, so the SLP can listen back and check progress. Recordings never leave the device unless the SLP exports them.
Camera
On devices that support it, the SLP can turn on visual feedback, which uses the front camera to track mouth and face movement (for example, lip rounding). The camera image is processed live on the device and never stored, recorded or sent anywhere. Only simple measurements, such as how rounded the lips were on a try, are kept with the student's results. The camera is optional. Every feature works with audio alone.
Exports and sharing
Nothing leaves the device automatically. The SLP can choose to:
- create a PDF progress report, generated on the device, and share it with the share sheet (for example, to print or to add to a school record)
- export one student's records
- send a practice pack (targets and word lists, no recordings) to a family's copy of a separate companion app, by AirDrop, QR code or the share sheet
Once the SLP shares a file, the school's or clinic's own policies apply to it.
No ads, analytics or tracking
SoundQuest has no advertising, no third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, no advertising identifiers and no tracking across apps or websites. We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use student data to train our speech models.
Children
SoundQuest is designed for children aged 3 to 10, under adult supervision. We do not collect personal information from children. Because all student data stays on the device and is controlled by the SLP, schools can use SoundQuest under their own authority under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Children cannot make purchases, follow links out of the app or contact anyone from the child area of the app.
Not a medical device
SoundQuest is a practice and progress-monitoring tool for use with an SLP. It does not diagnose, treat or cure any condition, and its feedback does not replace the SLP's judgement.
How long data is kept
Records stay on the device until the SLP deletes them. The SLP can delete one student (which destroys that student's key, so the records cannot be recovered) or delete the app, which removes all of its data. See Delete a student's data.
Parents' and students' rights
Because we do not hold student data, requests to see, correct, export or delete a student's records go to the student's SLP, school or clinic, who can act on them in the app straight away. If you are not sure who that is, email us and we will help you find the right person.
Security
Student records are encrypted on the device, each student with a separate key. Clinician mode is locked with a passcode or Face ID. Schools should also use a device passcode and their usual device management. No method of protection is perfect, but no student data is held on our servers to be breached.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change affects how student data is handled, we will tell SLPs in the app before it takes effect.
